In New York on January 1 in court, both plaintiff and defendant attended the Tilton Beecher case. Ex Judge Morris led for the prosecution, noting the case’s extraordinary reach. Beecher arrived with Mrs Beecher and a son as Morris warned of its far reaching consequences. A recess followed the opening remarks.
A private country meeting is planned in Washington this week with one leading Democrat from each state to discuss the political situation. Ex Governor Magoffin of Kentucky is expected to preside. Secretary Belknap received a letter from Wendell Phillips praising Sheridan’s dispatches and thanking the administration. In the House Dawes presented Charles Abert’s case as a recusant witness in the Pacific Mail Investigation. Kasson introduced a bill to restore specie payments, calling for cancellation of redeemed treasury notes.
Madrid reports government forces routed Carlists at Valencia with forty killed and forty captured. The restoration of Charles the Third Isabella the Catholic and Maria Theresa orders is noted as the king plans to enter the capital Thursday night. Dom Carlos vows continued vigorous war efforts despite the monarchy restoration.
The Cheyenne daily bulletin lists observations from multiple stations with temperatures ranging from -22 to 55 and cloudy or light snow conditions in several cities. It includes a dissolution notice for a firm, a reminder about copying advertisements, coal orders from Rock Springs, and the annual meeting of the First National Bank of Cheyenne with director elections scheduled for January 12 at ten o clock.
The Presidents message on the Louisiana question will be read at a special Cabinet meeting today and submitted to Congress tomorrow. Written in part by Attorney General Williams, it is expected to alarm the country by justifying the Louisiana outrage and signaling a similar policy toward other Southern areas where White League influence persists.

In another note, Conger says the Congressional Countrie will close its sittings today.
