William M. Evarts former United States senator and secretary of state died in New York at age eighty three after a long feeble illness caused by pneumonia. He was famed as a top lawyer head of Evarts Choate Beaman and served as counsel to Beecher and to the Republican electoral commission. He had celebrated his eighty third birthday three weeks earlier and was honored by many prominent visitors.
Fire swept through Marietta’s business district destroying a saloon and twelve adjoining buildings. The volunteer department failed to contain the blaze and aid from Cleveland was required. Property loss exceeds $100,000.
From San Francisco on February 28 report that the transport Meade with the Eleventh Cavalry is not yet sighted but due. The transport Pennsylvania carrying the Thirty sixth Volunteer Regiment is expected tomorrow and weekly transports are anticipated to return from the Philippines with volunteer units.

Washington Feb 28 The Senate adopted a resolution by Senator Allen directing the secretary of the navy to transmit to the Senate the letters of Gunner Morgan and Sampson and all related correspondence. The body also approved conference reports and spent the rest of the day on the river and harbor bill.
Denver February 28. The Colorado legislature opened a probe into Speaker Montgomerys accusation that members were bribed to kill the clause granting the county assessor power to disclose neighbors property details. A committee was named to investigate.
Around eight this morning a burly Black man forced Mrs. Buchanan to cook his breakfast in her central Atlanta home. He ate, assaulted her, set fire to her clothing, and fled as she sustained serious burns while neighbors helped. A posse hunts the suspect.
Two women and a man abducted H. H. Thomas of De Kalb Illinois last night. They forced him into a hack, drove him around the city, and looted his valuables for ransom. Police rescued the merchant this morning and arrested the kidnappers.
London news reports the engagement of Baird Cutting secretary to Ambassador Choate to Lady Sy ble daughter of the Earl of Desert. The couple plan an April wedding with the Cutting family attending a renowned society event of the season.

Denver reports a circle narrows around Al Cowan charged with a series of murders on Capitol Hill. Hanson a hardware clerk identified Cowan as the buyer of heavy hammer handles shortly before the killings. No confession has emerged.

Harry Kistler, injured last September as a round house hostler, has returned from Denver. Ben's ice house damaged by fire but contained by the fire department. The Duke of Manchester faces a suit over terriers he bought but did not pay for. The dealer demanded payment and the duke claimed lack of funds. His father in law refused to pay, and as the duke began transporting the dogs to England the dealer seized them en route to the sea.
Eningson, on duty as a coast guardsman, admits he heard a distress signal the morning the Rio Janeiro wrecked but did not act. He was suspended this afternoon. The Laramie Republican plans to publish laws enacted by the Sixth legislative assembly and offer daily publication for 60 cents during the period.
