A new dancing school opens Tuesday February 21 from 8 to 10 am with dancing instructions. From 10 to 12 am more dancing sessions. Evening tickets priced at 50 cents for ladies and one dollar for Gentas or per couple. Classes continue Wednesday and Friday from 10 to 12 pm. Public invited. Puor, M. W. Burtt.
The copartnership Thorp and Wightman dissolves by mutual consent with W R Wightman assuming all debts and authorized to receipt for the same. Also notices on lost goods, advertising merchants Smith Harrington Dare Collins Addams Glover and a Catholic parsonage building bid invitation with plans at F W Cooper office in Cheyenne dated February 24 1889.
The Utah territorial legislative assembly adopts a memorial to Congress asserting that rumors threaten local self government. It accuses federal officers and outsiders of manipulating finances and attacking the Mormon community, pledging to defend vested rights under the organization act and U S Constitution.
Washington notes Henderson proposes to retire Grant and asks for referral to military affairs. Reed reports a nine member select committee on women’s rights. A silver dollar coinage bill passes House panel. Vermont’s Grant backs North Dakota territory and temporary government. House moves to post office appropriation. Springer seeks red ink envelopes for official mail.
Washington reports the comptroller authorizes the First National Bank of Durango Colorado to commence business with capital of 60000. Other items include court martial actions, post office inspector appointments, and the Garfield postage stamp debut. The Crystal Palace electrical exposition opens in London.
Tiffany at San Carlos telegraphs from Onenay Washington that Indians at the agency are anxious as March 3 execution date nears. Other prisoners complain of long confinement without trial after pledges of speedy fair trial and good counsel. He warns of potential trouble if carried out and asks postponement while cases against others accused of treachery are decided. War Department to review dispatch before the president acts.
Washington notes report strong language from Sargent supporters about his banishment from the country. They claim he was invited from California to join the cabinet and even prepared to bring his family, with the president aware. Also, a string of 25 February local notices describe grand jury presentments on post office straw bond cases, a fatal rail accident in Richmond, a sinking Russian steamer near the Black Sea, a deadly wire factory accident in Newark, and ex Governor Palmer denying Tilden’s presidential link in 1844.
San Francisco reports ex district attorney D J Murphy shot through the neck in the police court by policeman John Maroney. Murphy, defense attorney in a Dolliver indecent exposure case, likely fatally wounded. Maroney the prosecuting witness.
Cairo residents aid in raising levees after mayoral proclamation as water locks near overflow. Missisippi levee reportedly broke at 2 p m amid widespread panic with few details. Also notes on Trebinji Austria smallpox outbreak and various patent medicine claims.
Wyoming territorial council and house meet in long sessions. bills introduced and referred to finance and judiciary committees. water, revenue, and court reforms debated. leaders thank Union Pacific for an excursion invitation to Leadville.
The executive committee of the Wyoming musical convention held a meeting at C. N. Potter’s office. The committee set the Cheyenne convention from Monday evening March 13 to Friday evening March 17 and appointed subcommittees for hall, printing, transportation, guest entertainment, and correspondence.
A special legislative excursion train departs tomorrow morning at 9 railroad time 8 25 local time heading to Denver with a stop at Leadville and return plan via Denver and Carbonate camp arriving back Thursday. The note adds fire losses at Lutnam Brooks confectionery in Grand Rapids and Fulton Co boot and shoe factory in West Brookfield with substantial insured damage.
