Impeachment of Governor Ames in Mississippi House

In Jackson on February 25 the Mississippi House adopted a resolution impeaching Gov. Ames for high crimes and misdemeanors. House managers Featherstone Tucker Percy Muldrow Barksdale Spigler were chosen to prosecute before the Senate. Lieut. Governor Davin's counsel filed pleas denying the articles.

Bank Robber Lanning Arrested in Kern Valley Heist

Bakersfield cashier Lanning confessed to robbing the Kern Valley bank and led authorities to recovered funds. A separate report says the steamer Kalorgana ran ashore at Ban Buena Ventura in heavy seas and will be a total loss.

Congress Passes Debt Refunding Bill Amid Debates

Washington February 25 Congress approved the bill amending acts for refunding the national debt. An adverse report on the revolution army claims bill was made and indefinitely postponed. The House ordered extra agricultural reports printed for 1873 and the military academy bill was discussed without action. The Senate met in executive session and adjourned. The District of Columbia bonds interest bill was laid over after debate. Swann reported State Department correspondence on Gen Sehnck and the Kimma mine, referred to Foreign Affairs. The House then took up private calendar bills and adjourned for general debate tomorrow.

Judge Delays Sentencing as New Trial Motions Pending

The court gave the defendant until the 20th to file rebuttal testimony. Judge Dillion proposed leaving the caveats intact while motions for new trials are resolved, a plan the District Attorney Dyer supported to safeguard government interests.

The Senate confirms J Db Burrow of Nebraska as U S consul at Dublin and John M Wilson of Iowa as consul at Hawburg. McKee Seeks New Trial in Missouri Case

In St Louis on February 25 Col Hatch for McKee filed an act in support of a new trial claiming prejudicial editorials from the Republican were served. An affidavit relates to juror Summers in Pike County who allegedly prejudged the case calling McKee a guilty “toad to the puddle.” The court granted time for further affidavits with deadlines set for March.
