London reports a social earthquake as Major Atherton of the Twelfth Lancers sues for divorce from Mabel Louisa Atherton and names the Duke of Westminster as co respondent. Attempts to settle failed. Atherton refused a 200000 check and King Edward tried to quiet the matter. The case will not be tried until autumn.
Cripple Creek February 21 masked men attempted a robbery at gambling rooms connected to the National hotel. A. J. Herron called the Roulette Crouper displayed nerve and used his revolver to delay the robbers, who fled without obtaining any money after he was shot and continued firing.
Eight hundred distressed Boers trudged past the Piennars river in Pretoria dispatches. They were ragged and debated desertion or surrender as they fled toward safety.
Vice President elect Roosevelt lands in Chicago at dawn and is greeted by a crowd of reporters. He declines to be interviewed, then hides in a carriage and proceeds to the auditorium, later leaving for the east at two in the afternoon.
In Wichita on February 21 the court dismissed the case against Mrs Nation stating she acted to preserve the law and for public good, not with malice toward proprietors of the joints she smashed.

He also pushes a favorable report on the Wilson arid land reclamation bill which the House approved this morning. The bill envisions reclaiming and irrigating about one hundred million acres.
Washington reports Senator Wolcott received notice of a remarkable strike in his mine, the Last Dollar, at Cripple Creek. The find reportedly yields over $20,000 per ton for more than a foot of ore and would greatly increase Wolcott's wealth.
A mountain crest sliding into Loughborough inlet after an earthquake shook the surrounding district for seconds. The break extended 400 feet from shore with giant trees and rocks carried away. A tidal wave swept the inlet and boats were hurled into the woods. Reports come via the steamer Coquitlam with color commentary from newspapers.

Mr and Mrs John Hoefer and their two children faced hunger after selling nearly all furniture for food and fuel. The parents died in a hospital in a frightful emaciated state while the children were left malnourished. Mrs Hoefer reportedly wished her sister Mrs Theodore Fohrman of Philadelphia to take the children.

Atlanta reports an oil tank exploded in the Maddox Brothers wholesale grocery house. The fire damaged the building and adjoining property, with losses pegged at about half a million dollars. Also a lynching case from Lake Charles where Thomas Vital, accused of assault, was taken from his home and killed. Our Leader Cigar advertised as leading brand in smoking public.
