Albert Neilson, 3 year animal keeper at Indianapolis Zoological Gardens, was killed by a Bengal tiger after entering the wrong cage. Attendants fought the beast with hot irons and seven bullets, ending the attack. Neilson’s body was sent to Piqua, Ohio.
A Cheyenne prescription service touts a guaranteed safe system to prevent errors in dispensing. It highlights highly trained clerks and the largest, freshest stock, claiming twenty years of success and leading toilet articles business in town with attractive prices.
Weyler proclaims martial law and posts troops to control all parts of Madrid. The ministry’s downfall seems certain and a coup d etat is suspected after years of preparation. The uprising involves all classes of malcontents and mirrors the French Revolution.
Emma B. Johnson, widow, sues Andrew Schulson in district court for $20,000 alleging libelous statements declaring her unchaste and accusing her of killing her former husband John Lofgren and poisoning her last husband, now deceased. Richards & Ferry represent the plaintiff. Schulson is a well to do local resident.
Cincinnati February accident sends a Dayton Kentucky bound street car down a fifty foot embankment into a stream. Thirty passengers aboard suffered numerous injuries with several fatally hurt and four dying by noon. The car reportedly struck a small obstruction on the rail before plunging over the embankment.
The Examiner reports President Hays visited New York to consult SP directors on extending the line into Mexico. The company owns the New Mexico Arizona and Sonora railway and aims to reach Mazatlan on Mexico’s west coast.
Mrs. Osgood wife of the Seattle and Benton railway president was robbed of 7000 dollars in jewels on the Oregon express while north of Sacramento. A negro and a white woman are suspected. The man fled, the woman was detained and searched but released.
The German steamer Gildemeister is outside the bay and will enter San Francisco. Insurance speculators who insured her losses will gain 118000 on a 30000 investment. In Cape Colony Murrayburg is occupied by Boers and French has captured a Boer course near Ermito. The Journal of Commerce reports a new cereal trust organized in New York. Mauriea Thompson dies at Crawfordsville. Sunergae Bake Day Sale announced for Kent bank building on Saturday February 16.
A Berlin telegraph to the Herald reports Empress Frederick in extremely critical status. Physicians attend constantly to ease pain as the royal family stays near the palace, with collapse deemed imminent.
At a conference arranged by Lord Minto in Ottawa February 15, leaders warned that tuberculosis causes more than one fifth of deaths in the Dominion and is spreading in the United States. They urged government and municipal action to lessen the disease and decided to raise the issue with Washington.
Mrs. Lulu Price Kennedy was indicted after shooting her husband Phillip Kennedy in Kansas City. The case stemmed from her suit to set aside a marriage she claimed was part of a conspiracy. Gilbert A. Pierce former United States senator from Dakota and territorial governor died today at the Lexington hotel in Chicago. A Civil War veteran, Pierce served twelve years as managing editor of the Chicago Inter Ocean from 1871 to 1883. He was 65.
Joseph De La Harpe, famed theatrical scenic painter, died at his Brooklyn home. He painted scenery for forty seven theaters. his first work was for the Salt Lake theater under manager Brigham Young. In Washington, Delegate Wilcox of Hawaii won unanimous House Elections Committee approval for his seat in Congress and full privileges.
King Edward and Queen Alexandra reviewed the Horse Guards at Buckingham Palace in a glittering ceremony. Present were Colonel Roberts and General Buller, with a notable royal display observed by attendees.
A marriage license was issued today by the clerk to Neill L McKinnon of La Grange Texas and Mrs Manuelita Chaves of Denver. Also listed are a 26 percent off sale on underwear and socks for ten days and an advertisement for fresh milk cows for sale through A Chapman.
