Dry farming success fuels eastern Colorado settlement boom

Lieut. Gov. William R. Harper says Arriba and surrounding towns show rapid dry farming gains with no failures when rules are followed. A farmer in the Arickaree valley profited enough to pay land costs, and overall profits rival rainbelt farms. Rail towns report heavy freight and expanding trade as Arriba’s mercantile firm posts over 63,000 in sales and grows its stock to 45,000.

Desert Land and Game Reserve Proposals Stir Senate Panel

Utah Washington February six senate public lands committee discussed the Smoot bill to create 120 acre dry farming homesteads and 820 acre desert lands extensions. The plan may pass soon as amendments seek to exclude Idaho and Montana. A separate measure would extend desert land entry deadlines and allow reassignment to eligible applicants. A Carter bill would waive both fine and imprisonment for unlawful fencing on public lands up to $1000. Senate hearing also covered forestry receipts in Colorado and Wyoming and Smoot’s bill to enlarge Grand Canyon game reserve to aid winter range, potentially shifting buffalo and elk from Yellowstone.
