Berlin dispatch notes alarming reports about relations between Germany and France. Professor Anderson the conjurer is dead. Tweed's counsel appeared before Judge Davis to seek stay and settle bill or exceptions for review. decision expected in a few days.
Washington February 4 Myra Clark Gaines files suit in equity seeking an injunction to restrain Caleb Corhin from receiving patents and certificates from the Interior Department for about 6800 acres of Louisiana land she claims he fraudulently obtained through trust and title confirmation. Judge Wylie issues a restraining order returnable February fifteenth. The article covers election proposals, health department plans, and remarks by General Harney on whiskey trade and Indian policies.
Report from Wilkesharre dated February 4 states a mine fire at the Ruyple mine reignited after an initial suppression. Eighteen men were rescued. the gas hazard remains. A separate note from Commanqua reports rolling mills restarting after a labor stoppage and resumed operations.
The American Iron and Steel Association met in Philadelphia on June 4. The general iron trade is seen as improving since the start of the panics. Of about 500 mills, 71 are operating and 34 foundries, 14 are idle. Iron on hand totals about 8000 tons and unemployment exceeds 12,000 workers.
In February report from Cincinnati, women organize anti liquor campaigns across counties and towns. They patrol saloons daily, protest outside establishments, and urge total abstinence pledges. In Fayette, Gallipolis, and nearby areas, saloons face closures or disruptions as residents join the movement.
Mrs Myra Clair Goines petitions Judge Wytiv alleging trust for 000 acres of Louisiana land given to Cale Cushing, minister to Spain, who after counterdeal and acknowledgment kept title in his name. She seeks an injunction to stop patent issuance by the Interior Department as Cushing sails for Spain on the Titanic.
Fragmented Memphis and Louisville region report a machine shop shutdown with five locomotives and seven cars idled, throwing five hundred workers out of employment. Elsewhere John McCarthy, a former employee, attacked the office and was pursued by watchmen, while a separate report notes the seventh annual session of the national grange of patrons of husbandry in St. Louis with secret proceedings and a keynote address by D. W. Adams. In Omaha five tons of mail from London to San Francisco for Australia and New Zealand passed through the city.
Fragmentary foreign notes from London Paris and Berlin mention revising events in Greenwich Maine Slr David Bulantone and Bishop Led choonki. The Paris report cites a debate on four million francs for reconstruction of public buildings damaged during the Commune with mentions of Pulllerios and Palale royal.
