London reports Lord Kitchener says British losses were 21 killed and over 100 wounded after a Boer force of 1400 attacked Mererfonten. The Boers gained renewed energy from the engagement, while British setbacks include the loss of Medefontain and river areas. Pretoria dispatches say the Boers vow no surrender until the last burgher dies.
Topeka Kansas reports a plot to tar and feather Mrs Nation after she halted her anti murder shop actions. City marshal safeguards her as a tip from a trusted black friend reached police. Paris notes Ambassador Porter Mrs Porter and daughter join Queen Wilhelmina at The Hague for her marriage. San Francisco reports President McKinley will address University of California commencement on May 15.
The Dominion government has moved to buy the nation’s telegraph systems and greatly extend them, to be operated under the post office department. The service would be under absolute government control, and the public has favored the plan.
William A Brady, manager for Jeffries, says no interference will come despite Governor Nash action. He believes the court will rule the Jeffries Ruhlin fight is legal boxing and allowed by law, else it would be stopped. the judge’s decision will determine whether the event proceeds or is shut down.
An enormous Windsor crowd witnessed Queen Victoria's funeral as her body was laid to rest beside Prince Albert Edward in Frogmore cemetery. Pittsburg February 4. A four story iron building housing the Stevenson Foster Printing company on Wood street collapsed and caught fire. The structure was completely destroyed and the loss is estimated at $200,000.
A Thermopolis special reports a major coal discovery on Gooseberry creek near Thermopolis. Landowner David Dilkie supplied samples showing high quality coal rivaling carbon. The nine foot vein has been opened to fifteen feet with minimal ash and strong heat, prompting experts to assess its potential. the find is hailed as a milestone in Wyoming coal mining.
Denver February 4 news notes the army reorganization bill would elevate numerous Colorado military personnel including Brigadier General Merriam to major general and Captain Varnum to major. Other officers from Forts across Texas New Mexico and Arizona are slated for captaincies.
