A mixed dispatch from Washington reports various House and Senate actions on bills and nominations. Key items include tax and money bills, land and post route measures, and a dramatic Vermont murder-suicide incident with a wife surviving.
The committee urged adverse reports on all bills and petitions for Indian depredations. It said the government cannot pay from the treasury or Indian trust funds. The War Secretary sent Texas border records to the House, advised recruiting regiments of 1,000 men, and warned further troops would pull from the 3rd cavalry risking the U P railroad and settlements. He noted Gen Meigs European mission with brigadier pay and allowances and staff expenses.
In St Louis Maguire pleads guilty to five counts in a conspiracy to defraud the government. Prof John Tyndall is set to marry and Rev Jabez Burns is reported dead. The debt statement shows a total of 2 118 248 090 with a decrease from June 1875. Southern Life Insurance Co of Memphis formerly in bankruptcy with liabilities of 1 117 000.
