Special from Rawlins Wyoming reports miner Beattie from Rock Springs killed after being hurled from a Union train. He crawled about twenty five yards in the snow before dying from three gunshot wounds including loss of both eyes. No suspect identified.
Joe Hoppy Mulkey a Thermopolis murderer escaped custody aboard the Cheyenne Flyer. He vaulted through a swaying window while the train traveled forty thirty miles an hour and landed uninjured in snow. Deputy Morrison and passengers halted the train and a search party traced his tracks away from the line toward Wheatland. Mulkey is jailed in Laramie County and headed to Rawlins for a twenty year term.
Mulkey, nicknamed Hoppy, leapt from a moving train near Thermopolis in a suicide attempt after being pursued by searchers. He was captured, returned to the smoker, and later sentenced in Lander to twenty years for manslaughter in the Doga Kid killing. He is in poor health and unlikely to survive prison.
Governor Bryant B. Brooks appointed Wyoming representatives to the Dry Farming Congress in Salt Lake City. The list includes W. C. Deming Casper area, H. B. Henderson Cheyenne, John Hay Rock Springs, Wilford A. Hyde Aston, Donald Mitchie Casper, George A. Paxton Evanston, and others from Cheyenne Evanston Newcastle Smoot Shoshoni and nearby communities.
United States senators congressmen and business leaders gathered in Cleveland on December 23 to back a ship subsidy plan for ocean steamers. Delegates cite broad public interest in the merchant marine and plan a campaign to educate and press Congress this winter for a mall subsidy. The convention predicted a large federal appropriation to help the U S merchant fleet compete internationally. A banquet ended the day with a festive gathering.
Cody Wyoming December 25 a cable tramway fall caused by a failing line killed Joe Balach and seriously injured two other laborers at the Shoshone river canyon where government dams are being erected. The incident marks another accident in the tramway operation.
The remotes of A J Perry who died last Friday at Chico Cal arrive from the West this evening. The funeral will be Thursday morning at 10 at the late residence 610 West Seventeenth Street Rev J L Jordan officiating.
Taggart announces July 7 1908 Denver Colorado as the national convention site. He states each state and territory delegations and lists a special committee on arrangements including Roger Sullivan James C. Dahlman Norman Mack R. M. Johnson John T. McGraw John E. B. The Gotham Republican Club endorsed Governor Hughes for the Republican presidential nomination and urged Republicans nationwide to cooperate in his nomination and election.
Albany Georgia dispatch reports a black secret hall blown to pieces by dynamite at Kestler, with two other halls near the town razed Friday night. At least five halls have been demolished in a month, spreading terror among Negroes who fear white men target halls over labor concerns.
Early Sunday morning two small buildings at the southeast corner of Eddy and Highteath Streets were destroyed by fire. They belonged to the estate of Davis Carey. Aside from some furniture, the blaze caused little other damage. The Alert company injured its chemical wagon en route, while J T Clark Hoge’s wagon came to aid until repairs were made.
Special to The Lender Lander reports Ruturt Mutkes, a timior enimbler, was sentenced to twenty years for manslaughter in the killing of a Syrian at Miernovolts months ago. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter and received the term.
George Bell a wealthy railroad contractor from Pueblo Colorado who has been stopping at the Inter Ocean hotel yesterday was moved to a hospital in Cheyenne seriously ill from an unspecified illness. Bell is associated with Patrick Dros and Collins in the report.
Municipal drive targets landlords renting for minor purposes around Bent and Eighteenth streets with Margaret Henne slated for arraignment. Deserter F S Krumm, recently deserting Fort Russell, was captured and handed to military authorities. Soldier Ogelsby faces theft charge from a fellow trooper and possible concealed weapon prosecution. Frank King Max Beck and F S Rosas fined for disturbances in the red light district. Saunders jailed for theft after taking money from another man.
Special to The Leader Rawlins Wyoming Lec 28. Three convicts complete eighteen month sentences at the Wyoming penitentiary just in time to spend Christmas at home. Names include John Barnerd Natrona county rape, Guat Adams Natrona county theft, and Clarence May mond Natrona county grand larceny.
A newspaper record notes the death by self-inflicted gunshot at seven o'clock in the evening of a prominent local paper company secretary named Dee Onala. The incident occurred at his residence, with contemporaneous local reports detailing the shock in the timber and paper trade community.
Wyoming authorities seize an abused boar after allegations involving state animal protection officials and two firms, including the Union Pacific Malle company and the Pacific press company, with possible ensuing trouble.
A hog shipped from Iowa State College Ames to Cheyenne in a small crate without food or water was seized 50 hours after dispatch by Dr W F Pilae ging state veterinarian and board president for violating the 28 hour law and for neglect after remaining 30 hours in the express office. Mrs Gould died Saturday at St Johns hospital after coming from Saratoga Wyoming a week ago for medical care. Mr Gould belongs to Woodmen of the World and Knights of Pythias lodges.
Ex Governor Osborne and wife reach Denver and take rooms at the Shirley Hotel. He becomes the first Democratic National Committee member in town since the site was chosen and will help organize and set up arrangements for the national convention. He plans to base headquarters in Denver until the July convention.
Solemn pontifical mass will be celebrated by Bishop Keane at St Marys Cathedral on Christmas morning at five oclock. Convent school children will sing carols during the five oclock mass and the high mass at ten thirty will feature special music. The Ardeste Pidelea will be rendered with violin at the offertory.
Cokeville Wyoming December 22 The body of J W Stoner owner of Cokeville and prominent figure in Vinth county has been shipped to Hagerstown Maryland for burial. Stoner died suddenly in Salt Lake City several days ago after relocating in the 1860s. He laid out the townsite of Cokeville and most of the town formed his estate valued about 150000. He is survived by a widow.
Special to The Leader Oliver Orcott, a hole drill hand for Joe Staith, was struck when a misfired shot exploded in a rock cut along Comege ditch. The hammer and slug were hurled long distances, with Orcott reportedly sustaining injuries and the crew exposed to flying debris.
