A telephone message from the state penitentiary reports that Frank Cook, an escaped convict, is surrounded by a posse at Cottonwood Springs ten miles south of Canon City. Authorities expect to take him into custody before night.
Nineteen day shift workers at Home Telephone in Joplin Missouri struck over alleged discharge of union activists. Fifteen men also joined the protest. Commercial ads advertise shoes, Christmas gifts, and a Durant’s masque ball at Turner Hall with a Magel orchestra.
Colorado state canvassing board adjourned to 4 PM as it reconsiders contested seats that could shape the next legislature and senate. Party alignments hint at Governor Orman and Treasurer Chipley backing Democrats while Secretary Mille and Auditor Crouter support Republicans. Attorney General Post is indecisive.
Rev. Frederick Temple, archbishop of Canterbury and primate of the Church of England, died in London today. He had served as archbishop since 1896 and was born eighty one years ago in the Farian Islands. He played a notable role in King Edward's coronation, where he nearly collapsed from weakness.

Beatrice Nebraska reports a three story Masonic temple and adjacent buildings destroyed by fire. By noon the damage reached 409000 with flames unchecked due to low water pressure. The blaze began in Day's drug store basement, destroying Beatrice National Bank and twenty offices. The bank reportedly holds 300000 in cash and securities. Police Judge Collins, confined by rheumatism, awoke and alerted firemen who rescued him after smoke inhalation.
A fire in St. Joseph Missouri on December 23 caused $100000 in damage at the Chase candy factory. Six girls on the third floor escaped by jumping from the third story, three fatally injured and three seriously hurt. Fort Smith Arkansas December 23 Agnes Frizze accused of slander against A C Root entered trial jury seated after she was searched for weapons following a pistol discharge in the courtroom yesterday afternoon the bullet narrowly missing Root's lawyer. The jury returned a verdict that Root is acquitted later today Washington reports a complete blockade along the Venezuelan coast with British German and Italian ships in control.
For twenty five years the Washington Market offers a grander annual fat beef show this year. Proprietors spare no expense to present the finest dressed meats in the United States. A grand display includes turkeys ducks chickens and geese fish in all varieties oysters clams and vegetables. Market hours extend to nine thirty each night starting Saturday December 20 through the holidays.
In Cincinnati the Mitchell apartment fire sent eight tenants to hospital with burns and exhaustion after fleeing through blazing stairways. Judas Verden, his wife, and two children jumped from a first story window with serious injuries. Dwight Sabin, former U S senator from Stillwater Minnesota and noted lumberman and ex chairman of the national Republican committee, died in Chicago of heart trouble.

J C Chambers from Richards Ranch, New Mexico, goes to Douglas for Christmas. Sheriff James and Sheriff McDaniels plan Denver trip. Flora and Laura Lee visit from Cheyenne. Flora teaches in public schools. Laura visits for weeks.
The state supreme court issued an alternate writ of mandamus in the J W Sammon case. Cheyenne wins basketball at Keefe hall Tuesday night with Cheyenne East Denver and North Denver High Schools, followed by a dance. Ticketed events include 50 cent admission and a postgame dance. Notices also advertise men and women’s shoes and jewelry from local merchants.

The death of William J. Hyde, a printer and county patient in Newcastle, is attributed to his deliberate act. He drank, unscrewed a lamp burner, poured oil on himself, and set fire, with the burner in good condition indicating no explosion. The building burned out, Hyde burned beyond recognition.
