This morning every old employee in the Omaha Union Pacific shops struck, saying they could earn only half under the piece system versus the old day wage plan. Strikers include tionéré and carmen. A few hundred imported workers remain at work as management seeks to appease them with perks like good cooks and even women pianists for evening entertainment.
London crowds show strong enthusiasm for Boer generals despite rain. Delarey appears at hotel window to loud cheers and Botha receives a great ovation during a morning visit. The generals plan to return home tonight.
In Littleton Colorado on August 18 Roy Nondragon and Santiago Molina long time Santa Fe section hands were shot after they ordered three tramps away from the section house. They were transported to Denver with Nondragon in critical condition. Posses formed, three suspects at large.
Pittsburg Aug 18 dispatch from Loreto confirms Charles Schwab will retire from the presidency of the steel corporation and all active business to recruit his death. Schwab sees nobody but his relatives.
Vienna reports the death of Prof. Schenck eminent embryologist and author of a sex-determination system. His work stirred ongoing debate. It is claimed the scarina treatment aimed at male offspring failed.
Denver reports John W. Gates and seventeen followers in town after meetings at the Brown Palace Hotel. If they gain control of the company they intend to retain all currently employed foremen. The Leader subscription offer appears in the notice.
Lincoln Neb Aug 14 Colonel John 8 Cosby orders state land fences on government lands removed within sixty days or marshals will remove and destroy them. Offenders face 1000 fine. The move stirs excitement and talk of resistance. It would open about ten million acres of public domain in western Nebraska.
The shah of Persia arrived in London and was greeted by Prince Walter. He was driven to Marlborough House with troops lining the route and crowds giving a cordial welcome.
Governor Savage reported from North Platte that there is no need to call out troops as Union Pacific strikers face local police and the situation appears under control.
Washington August 18 The state department announced that Mr Sharrents United States commissioner of tariff revision in China signed the new tariff for the United States Saturday with representatives from six other nations England Germany and Japan Also cited were participating nations and the broader scope of the revision.
Omaha packing men report the Cudahy packing interests a.gold to a trust for 21 million dollars transferring September 1. The Cudahy brothers pledge not to re enter the packing business for a number of years. Local officers refuse to discuss the matter.

Denver reports Gates seeks control of the sixty million dollar Colorado Fuel and Iron company. President Osgood in town but cites illness or excuses, prompting questions who will steer the firm at next Wednesday's directors meeting.
Wilkes Barre Pa Aug 18 A rumor says President Mitchell may rush to New York to see President Morgan and seek aid to end the anthracite strike. Duryea reports no resume of work this morning and no move until cases against private police arrested after the riot are disposed of.
Coal dealers warn apartment house owners and agents they will receive only half their normal winter coal supply unless the strike is settled. The formal notice was sent out in New York on August 18.
In Wilkesbarre Pennsylvania workers began operation at the Malty colliery protected by a hundred private guards and stockades. In Omaha Nebraska the first Roosevelt club is formed and will align with the president’s upcoming visit.
Cincinnati court declares unconstitutional the law granting the old street railway company its franchise. The Cincinnati Traction Company is currently operating under that franchise. Plumbers meet in convention in Omaha as the United Association of Plumbers, Steamfitters and Helpers holds a week long gathering.
In Muscatine area August 18 a Rock Island El Paso limited train was ditched by a washout near Letts injuring several passengers. In Detroit August 18 Frank Andrews, president of the wrecked City Savings Bank, was sentenced to fifteen years at hard labor for misappropriating bank funds.
Cripple Creek reports Abraham Crevanthan a 42 year old miner killed himself at his home after breakfast in the presence of his wife and children. He used a pistol and died instantly. locals describe him as mentally unbalanced with no apparent trouble. He was an Odd Fellows officer and active in the miners union.
The dispatching district from North Platte to Cheyenne is split into two. This city will host a new dispatch office to handle trains from Sidney to Cheyenne, about 102 miles, while North Platte will cover North Platte to Sidney, 123 miles. About six dispatchers are expected to relocate here, with unknown new chief dispatcher candidates.
Governor Richards of Wyoming, renominee, told at the Adams hotel last night that Wyoming will be carried by the Republican party. He expects re election next fall and said sheep grazing troubles have been exaggerated. He noted ranges have been better and warned no militia action is needed.
Nelson T. Wood of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Home in Cheyenne has been granted a pension of $8 per month starting June 1, 1897, thanks to efforts by Senator Warren. The back pay totals nearly $500, making the elderly veteran very happy today.

H F Andrews returns from Grand Encampment. Mrs Dobyna of the Western Union visits. J D Freeborn returns from Denver meeting his daughter. Mrs Charles Carey and Miss Zipp arrive from Denver. Mrs Frances Ollerenshaw called to Livingston, Mont., for sister’s illness.
The Laramie Republic reports trains run westbound on the old line between Laramie and Hermosa Junction while eastbound use the new road. Forelle and Stranka telegraph offices closed, Hermosa Junction staffed day and night, and operators sleep in a tent near the track. Provisions are left at improvised stations as crews adjust for the shift. The first service over the old line began at midnight.
A force of machinists and boiler makers from the east arrived to revive idle shops in Laramie. New machinery is en route and repair operations will start immediately with about thirty workers, expected to double in days, though no confirmation was available from headquarters. Local forecast notes cooling trend and storms for Cheyenne region.
