A riotous breakout occurs as Tennessee convicts seize guards and flee a transport train bound for the state penitentiary. The escape follows an armed confrontation amid the Weirton era reform era crime wave.
Aug 13 dispatches report tree miners at Tracey City Tennessee set fire to stockades housing convict workers. Free men forced out the town at gunpoint while convicts evacuated by train. Killings and escapes occur as guards pursue in mixed pursuit along the line.
About 1,500 locked-out workers packed the Homestep rink for a mass meeting. Leaders including President Gowpers and Secretary P J McGuire of the Brotherhood of Carpenters spoke, boosting confidence. Frank Chili was assaulted by three attackers and fined five dollars plus costs, or forty eight hours in jail. Steamers Will be Registered. Philadelphia reports President Griscom confirms two steamers to sail on the American register with plans for two more vessels under American flag by Crane & Son.

Denver reports Garv Dunn formerly of New York City died at St Luke s Hospital after being shot in the head during an attempted suicide last night. Officials offered no statement on motive or cause before Dunn’s death.
