In Austin, Tennessee, U S troops captured twenty Black prisoners. one was killed escaping, another wounded. Large groups of Black locals attacked the courthouse guard but were repulsed with several dead and wounded. Reinforcements are en route by chartered steamer to aid the surrounded troops.
Reports from Paris and London detail Marshal Bazaine escaping from the Saint Marguerite island prison. A rope ladder aided his ascent to a vessel bound for Italy with later movements toward Basel and Brussels. The escape involved a terrace over a cliff and watchful guards during Sunday night.
A man tied to a rope slipped from a cliff and cut his hands. blood stains mark the rope. Bagaine, his wife, and cousin waited below in a hired boat and aided his water arrival. Madame la Marechal steered to a distant steamer off the Inland, and the group was safely aboard as the vessel departed.
