An inmate at Washington prison attempted to blow open a cell using improvised explosives. Guards detained him after the explosion failed to breach the wall, with no injuries reported. Investigators opened a review to identify accomplices and secure the facility.
Seattle early today Jack Chesterfield dynamited the county jail and wrecked his cell in a bid to escape. He fired six shots at jailers who tried to restore order, then shot himself as water flooded the cell. He had been to be moved to the penitentiary for a three year sentence for criminally assaulting a young girl.
The United States may soon appoint an ambassador to Turkey replacing the current minister accredited to the sultan. The change requires Turkey to agree and the president to propose the appointment, as Turkish precedent uses legations and monarchical protocol. Chekib Bey has not presented credentials to the President.
American jockey Maher rode a remarkable four-race spell at Goodwood on August 2 securing three wins and one runner up. He claimed the Goodwood plate aboard His Majesty, riding for Lord Derby, in today’s program.

In Helena Montana August 2 in Judge Hunt s courtroom Albert Jemison testified for the government in the Cobban perjury case. Jemison said he struck a deal to locate claimants who would sell titles to Cobban and receive 10 to 25 dollars for locating. He claimed Cobban paid him 800 to 1600 dollars.
New Orleans business leaders near completing plans to prove a scientific use of the mosquito theory can stamp out yellow fever even after it gains headway. They will adopt disinfection fumigation and future quarantines, with support from the Board of Health and other prominent figures.
Mankato Minn Aug 2 The jury in the third trial of Dr G R Koch dentist New Ulm charged with murdering rival dentist Dr L A Gebhart on Nov 1 returned a verdict of acquittal.
The body of Omaha attorney IL KR Andrews, who vanished Friday during an outing, was recovered in the Platte River about fifteen miles from the month to day. He died with a rifle at his camp and foul play is suspected while friends reject a suicide explanation.

In Missouri during the Frank H. Farris bribery trial former Governor John A. Lee testified that Farris offered to smother both house and senate alum bills in committee for 7100 with 1000 per committee member except Dowell. Lee said he alerted D J Kelly of New York and that Kelly urged Telegram and distance telephone contact. Jury was excused as objections arose.
