Rentalsman staff cut as Bill 5 looms and courts face strain
The Rentalsman office terminates eleven staff today and warns thirty more will leave by September 30 amid plans to abolish the office under Bill 5. In 1982 it handled 228000 public enquiries with 51000 files, including 5200 small claims disputes. If Bill 5 passes, most issues move to Small Claims or county courts, increasing delays and costs. A two thirds of staff may be fired by October 31, leaving one third to operate. The district council in Chetwynd met September 20 with daylight saving time discussion and a Dawson Creek referendum request for clarity before any regional vote.

Chetwynd Seeks 1983 Citizen of the Year Nominations
Nominations open from any organization or two individuals with a brief outlining contributions to the community in 1983. Nominations must be received by noon October 24 in a sealed envelope marked Citizen of the Year Nominations and briefs. The award will be presented at the Civic Night Banquet on November 5 with a committee drawn from local chamber council ministerial association and a member chosen by them.

Provincial Emergency Program meeting in Chetwynd
The first Provincial Emergency Program informational meeting was held September 22 at Airport Building Ck wynd with about 35 attendees. Organizer Bobbie Larsen welcomed guests and introduced PEP staff. Regional Manager Barry Ake praised the response from the Chetwynd community and a film on disaster prevention was shown. Planning noted 10,088 PEP volunteers registered and that Chetwynd is among sites with a municipal plan underway under Omineca-Peace-Cariboo Regions. Reports from CE District of Chetwynd RCMP, Search Rescue, Fire Dept Chief, Chetwynd Hospital Ambulance, Communications, Social Services, Health, Civic Centre, government agencies, and others were provided.
