A 5 year old, Conrad Joseph Brazeau, was found drowned in a lagoon five miles east of Chetwynd on Walei Estates. He had been missing since the evening of September 22 and was located by a neighbour on Saturday morning. RCMP and locals conducted the search. The death is reported as drowning.
Colin McMillan was elected School Board Trustee in District 59 with 73 votes out of 154. Roy Cochrane was second with 49, Bob Shirley third with 31, and 1 ballot rejected. McMillan, a registered nurse at Chetwynd General Hospital, aims to raise education standards and improve school maintenance, facilities and playgroups in the Chetwynd area. He is the father of one child starting school this year.
Mayor Charles Lasser and Aldermen of Chetwynd’s District Council attended the 86th Union of British Columbia Municipalities Annual Convention, returning with updates on municipal affairs and regional issues.
In Cariboo the NDP's Dave Zirnhelt defeated the Socreds on September 20, marking a rare win in three decades. The same day Provincial Secretary Bill Reid offered his cabinet resignation amid allegations of channeling $277,000 of taxpayer funds to a campaign-linked company. Reid's move followed a wave of cabinet upheaval as Vander Zalm's government faced multiple resignations. The Cariboo bye election followed MLA Alex Fraser's May death, with broader BC politics stirring ahead of municipal and provincial discussions at the UBCM meeting in Penticton.
