CFI helping unemployed in Chetwynd Forest Industries with a government sponsored employment bridging assistance program. The program addresses mass layoffs due to recession, focusing on highly skilled workers in areas where attracting replacements is challenging.
Council discussed inviting ten bidders for Hazard Beakens with talks on property crossings, plus a CO.C.P. cost estimate of 254000 for upgrading and paving 46th street and nearby areas this year and next year if funds allow. A Nicholson name proposal prompted talk on honoring pioneers, while a growth report cited 31 percent summer apartment vacancies and a planned Willow Creek Coal Project environmental study.
The village council continues support for North Cariboo Airlines which filed a license with the Canadian Transport Commission in Ottawa to operate Fort St. John to Tumbler Ridge Chetwynd and Prince George. A 5 day service on an 8 seat plane was proposed, with Columbia Air pursuing a similar license. Yellow Bird Air asked council to back a Vancouver to Chetwynd route with charter to five days later expanding to six trips weekly, using a 30 passenger plane with a $145 one way fare, while already flying Chetwynd to Fort St. John on charter trips. Local travel agents note about 36 weekly bookings by Chetwynd residents to Fort St. John or Dawson Creek.
Police investigate a rash of early Saturday breakins across Chetwynd including the Post Office Bus Depot and freight area five rooms at Chetwynd Hotel the ABC Cafe and other Mall offices Red Rock Cinema display windows were smashed and the Rose Restaurant faced an attempted entry. No damage estimates yet. Also notes village service decisions and airline application delays.
Sunny weather drew 100 entrants under 12 in Echo’s Kids Parade on Saturday. Bunne Hoffman and Denise Kelm led the march through town as spectators filmed. Prizes included ribbons in each category and a Most Original trophy won by Jody Disher and Dallas Brown.
Terry Armstrong denounces a break in at the Tanis Friendship Centre in Chetwynd on September 12. He urges swift police action, prosecution, and community support to protect the centre’s volunteer efforts and grants. He asks for information to aid the investigation and reiterates that culprits are not welcome in the community.
