Chetwynd has long been a pivotal BC Rail junction since 1958 when the line reached the Peace River region. Its role intensified around 1980 to support the Tumbler Ridge branch construction with rail, tieplates, spikes, transformers, and other materials, following government requests to aid coal transport.

Federal and provincial representatives joined with Tumbler Ridge officials for the opening of the town's new RV park and campground. The project received 100000 in the form of an interest free loan under the Canada BC Travel Industry Development Subsidiary Agreement. Ribbon cutting featured Bob Inkpen and Brian A McMahon representing Don Phillips. Tram pleased the Government of Canada helped develop this tourist facility for the new community.
Enrollment at Chetwynd area schools rises slightly with Moberly Lake at 58 students, the highest in a decade and possible record. Total district enrollment reaches 1192. New staff join Chetwynd Senior Secondary, Windrem Elementary, Dokie, Don Titus, and Moberly Lake, replacing or returning from leaves.
Voter turnout reached 69 percent with 33 997 ballots cast from 49 204 eligible voters in the Prince George Peace River riding. Local polls recorded final tallies at Chetwynd Moberly Lake and Jackfish Lake Road with 569 noted in the captioned segment.
