Minimum wage boost approved in British Columbia plans
The B C government approves a two step rise from 7.15 to 7.60 per hour on Nov 1 2000 and to 8 per hour on Nov 1 2001 after consultations with business groups anti poverty agencies and unions. Joy MacPhail says the increase addresses long delays while Women's Equality minister Joan Smallwood notes 74 percent of earners are women. BCGEU and BCFEU leaders welcome the move saying it will improve living standards though some small businesses warn of reduced hours. Critics from Fraser Institute challenge the measure arguing benefits mainly go to teens in affluent homes and suggesting cash subsidies instead.
