West Fraser posts 45 million quarterly profit amid weak lumber prices
West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd reports a 45 million profit for the quarter ended September despite soft U.S. housing and lower lumber prices. The gain follows a 199 million loss a year earlier mainly from a liner board mill closure in northern B C. Chairman Hank Ketcham cites improved cash flow enabling reinvestment as markets slowly recover, with shipments to China rising as U S demand lags. British Columbia lumber shipments to China have grown steadily, approaching 1.63 billion board feet in 2009 and on pace to surpass it this year. West Fraser maintains extensive B C operations, including 100 Mile House.
