Mortgage burning ceremony held October 15 at Chetwynd Ski Hill after a day of volunteer work bee. Dean Westgate and Geoff Craven led rites to celebrate loan payoff and prep for a safe new tow bar. Lodge opened in 1972 replacing a shack burnt for the ceremony.
Grace McCarthy and Charlene Bissett share the distinction of owning Region H multi value gold coins. McCarthy received hers during a Fort St John visit last year, while Charlene won PRAHTA’s Pot O Gold contest and later received the coin at a Vancouver tea.
The British Columbia New Democratic Party starts a province-wide distribution of 350,000 leaflets titled Some straight talk about what's happening to British Columbia. Yvonne Cocke calls for awareness of the Bennett government’s performance, contrasting its record with the NDP and citing Statistics Canada and Finance data on investment, jobs, mining, and growth. The leaflet blames higher bankruptcies, a 50 percent per worker tax rise, and unemployment rising from 7.1 to 8.5 percent under Social Credit, with distribution planned over the coming month.
Two vacancies exist in the Canada Manpower sponsored upgrading class started October 17. Completion yields grade 10 equivalent for entry to many trades. The program offers continuous enrollment with living allowances varying by student need.
A new DREE funded agreement worth 50 million dollars was signed in October to support tourism in much of British Columbia excluding Vancouver Island and the lower mainland. PRAHTA officials hailed the move, noting loans grants and forgivable aid of up to 80 percent for eligible investments to create new jobs, with details to be circulated to regional tourism coordinators.
The October 17 regular Village of Chetwynd council meeting discussed the proposed Main Street beautification plan presented by Bunne Hoff man of the Chamber of Commerce and chamber president Ian Campbell. A map outlined area sectors and costs while council planned to review feasibility for the 1979 budget.
The Premier Bill Bennett unveiled a 60 million ferry construction plan to bolster shipbuilding and jobs in British Columbia. Two new Cowichan class vessels will serve the mainland Vancouver Island route and three Gulf Island ferries will be stretched to raise capacity. Recreation Minister Sam Rawlf said the program will employ about 750 shipyard workers over two years and boost the wider economy.
Three Aldermanic seats are open this year with two two year terms and one one year term. Incumbent John Jackman plans to seek re election for a two year term and Bunne Hoffman has indicated candidacy. At press time no papers had been filed at the Village Office.
