Pulp mill closure highlights five year low in prices
Louisiana-Pacific will close the Chetwynd pulp mill, laying off 192 workers as prices for Northern Bleach Softwood Kraft fall to about 450 a tonne and chemi-thermo-mechanical pulp to 300 to 350 per tonne. Analysts warn the slump may endure into 2002 with a tentative recovery tied to lower U.S. interest rates and weakened demand.
