Merlin Nichols and Bob Shirley are the district's two new councillors. The by election was close with 626 votes total. Nichols led with 171 votes and Shirley had 147, just 17 ahead of Wilfur on 130. Both look forward to duty though Shirley notes they cannot vote yet.
Growth driven by oil and gas and tourism in northeast B C with room revenues up 22 percent in 2000, slower but positive 6.8 percent in early 2001, and a record 3.5 million in April. Fort St John and Dawson Creek remain major revenue centers as the service camps and work camps boost demand.
