Sharp rise in unemployment under Mulroney blame
Prime Minister Mulroney blames the Liberal era for a jump to 11.8 percent unemployment in September from 11.2 in August. The jobless rate hit a high not seen since July 1983, as more workers entered the labor force amid school return and political shifts. District details note 1,363,000 unemployed and 16,000 more than August, with participation at a record 65.2 percent. Young workers 15 to 24 face 18.4 percent unemployment, while those 25 and over rise to 9.8 percent. The piece flags tax policy as aggravating unemployment and cites mixed signals on job creation promises.
