Fire safety in homes cuts fire deaths and insurance costs
The death rate from fire in Canada is among the world’s highest with about 85 percent of fatalities in residences and smoke inhalation the main danger. Smoke detectors, preferably photoelectric and ionization units, warn early especially at night. Place detectors between sleeping areas and living spaces and on stairwell ceilings in multi story homes. Battery powered or wired models exist with some including emergency lights and must be ULC CSA approved. Fire extinguishers, especially multi purpose dry chemical 1.3 kg and 2.26 kg, handle all fire classes and should be kept accessible and recharged after use. Regular checks help maintain pressure. Reducing fire hazards can lower insurance costs.
