The annual event in Chetwynd drew participants with signs and banners to protest violence against women and children. Co organizer Cheryl Widdicombe noted women face higher risks of male partner violence, especially after separation, and pointed out BC reports the highest violence rates. The march links to the global Take Back the Night movement started in 1978 in San Francisco and Vancouver, urging an end to violence worldwide.
Northern Health reports a about 2.1 million operating surplus near the midpoint of the 2006 2007 fiscal year. The NH Board in Fort Nelson notes the surplus is under half a percent of the 521 million annual budget and forecasts a break even year due to higher winter patient care and heating costs. The chair cites aging population and rising drug costs as ongoing pressures.
