A BC education policy column analyzes 1982 province wide grant cuts and district spending, noting BC ranks high in salaries and operating costs. It cites 17.8 percent district spending rise, 33,934 dollar teacher salaries, 188 193 instructional days, and 36 of 72 boards cutting costs without layoffs. It argues non instructional days and bargaining limits prevent closures, praises efficiency moves, and mentions entertainment blurbs and film listings.

Forests Minister blocks MacMillan Bloedel export rush
Tom Waterland denied MacMillan Bloedel 400 000 cubic metres of spruce balsam hemlock cedar and cypress logs. He said the policy protects a vigorous BC wood processing industry and that timber over local needs can be exported only after market procedures. The unanimous Log Export Advisory Committee backed the ruling. Some 230 Queen Charlotte Island loggers may lose work, but the minister urged development programs under federal provincial Employment Bridging Assistance to keep skilled workers employed until market improves.
