Chetwynd Khepo Resource Society Opens Centre

The Chetwynd Khepo Resource Society held a grand opening for its new centre at 4760 Wabi Crescent in a former residence. The board includes Chairwoman June Montgomery Secretary Nancy Atchison Treasurer Mary Evans and five directors. Membership is 42 and rising. Funding from the Federal Government enables two staff plus a day care worker and a Voluntary Initiative Program grant funds six more workers to finish the basement and build a fence for a future playground. Programs include Monday Women & Change and other drop-in activities.

Chetwynd Gymkhana Club awards banquet held

The Chetwynd Gymkhana Club held its 15th Annual Awards Banquet on November 24 with President Frankie Schreiber welcoming attendees and thanking trophy donors. Ruth Mills of Hudson Hope praised the recent August Horse Show, calling Chetwynd a very good show. Junior rep Vicki Westerlaken helped present runner-up and winner awards in each event.

Hospital releases coroner inquiry into teen death

Chetwynd General Hospital disclosed that Julie Ann Heagy, 14, died while under treatment on November 22. A coroner’s team, with three independent physicians, investigates events leading to her death. Another patient died after complications on November 1 in Vancouver. both cases are under inquiry and a final report is pending. Community notices list support groups and program times.

Bob Shirley Named Citizen of the Year by Chetwynd Chamber

Bob Shirley was chosen Citizen of the Year by the Chetwynd Chamber of Commerce for 1984. The citation, read by Harold Amundsen, notes his decades of civic service across multiple groups including the Chamber, Legion, fire department, and senior housing project.

Housing grants aid handicapped in Peace region

Two non profit societies in the Peace region receive grants totaling 53125 to fund eight group homes. Fort St John Association for Mentally Handicapped gets 27500 for four residents and Dawson Creek Society for the Handicapped 25625 for four. Funds cover property costs with private lending, mortgage insurance and interest write down by CMHC, plus separate funding for live in aides and training.

Power outage hits Walei Hill on November 28 1984

The Chetwynd Communication Society reports a BC Hydro scheduled two hour power outage for Walei Hill on November 28 1984. TV and FM radio will be off during the outage and service will resume as soon as power returns. The note lauds Bob Shirley as Citizen of the Year for his community roles and youth work.

Weed control debate at Chetwynd council meeting

Council heard from Mary Eaton director of the Regional District Weed Control program and Gerry Gleeson senior weed inspector. They urged funds in the 1985 provisional budget to curb noxious weeds and noted 183 private and 20 municipal weed notices in 1984 with 5 percent serious offenders. Public bodies were urged to share weed control duties and Eaton and Gleeson offered to assist in planning programs and public information sessions. VAL Coutinho reported program updates focusing on vandalism and safety topics.
