Government seeks to right historic wrongs with treaty settlement
The piece traces colonial land grabs from First Nations like Songhees and Esquimalt in the 1850s and later decades, noting compensation settlements after decades of dispute. It highlights shifts in federal and provincial policy culminating in a 2001 Nisga a debate and a 2005 settlement, and links the legislative site’s clearance to reconciliation efforts. The footnote mentions Aboriginal Affairs Minister Mike de Jong mediating a sacred cave dispute, aiding a biweekly ceasefire.
