The study, funded by the Community Resource Society, draws on listening and local sources over a year, noting a 1982 boom bust cycle, coal development promises, and strain on forestry and mills amid high interest rates and cautious spending.

Teachers’ salaries to be set by arbitration boards
More than 25,000 British Columbia teachers will have their 1983 salaries determined by arbitration boards and government agencies. By midnight Monday, six local teachers’ associations representing 973 teachers had accepted school board offers, Howe Sound met today to vote, and seven other associations representing 2,200 teachers had not yet concluded.

TV referendum and civic election results reported
Good turnout marks civic polls in Chetwynd with 49.9 percent voting for aldermen. Marian Hoover re elected with 327 votes and Joan Temple with 324 while Tom Wilson Sr. garnered 280. Voter list total 1913. TV referendum passed 378 yes 31 no. Other results include Capital Punishment ballot 370 yes 73 no and CBUT re broadcasting approval 432 yes 15 no. Hudson's Hope turnout 65 percent with incumbents elected. Dawson Creek incumbents re elected.
