Fire destroys Canfor Mill and sparks mayoral resignation
In a telephone interview Mayor Frank Oberle announced his resignation from Chetwynd's mayoralty, urging Dr. Lennox as his potential successor. A devastating fire gutted the Canfor sawmill, killing two workers Forrest Piper and James Hood, with 160 local employees affected and investigators probing the cause as water pressure failed and explosions echoed amid the flames. The mill, insured, will be rebuilt with efforts to restore employment.
