Western Coal reports quarterly profit hit by coal prices

Western Coal Corp posted a $2.2 million profit for the three months ended September, down from the prior quarter due to lower coal prices and a stronger Canadian dollar that trimmed revenues by $6.1 million in Q2. The company cut costs per tonne and forecasts better results in the second half as demand rises and prices grow. CEO John Hogg cautions about higher prices next year with cost reductions in place. The firm also plans significant expansion, aiming to restart a shelved project and boost Prince George’s mining supply role. Hogg retires December 1, to be replaced by Keith Calder.
