Pine Pass Railway Survey Led by Dr George Dawson 1879
Joseph Hunter's 1877 Pine Pass work set the stage for a 1879 railway survey led by Dr George M Dawson of the Geological Survey of Canada. Dawson's party of 74 pack animals and 22 horses traveled from the Skeena mouth to Parsnip River, crossing via Pine Pass to rendezvous east of the mountains, detailing climate, rock, soil, and river crossings with daily journals and maps. The team noted humid highland conditions, dense spruce groves, and abundant wild fruit as they advanced averaging about 5.5 miles daily amid swamps and trails.
