Village Council hears a proposed solution to the town’s Post Office crowding. Post Master Gary Chappel explains a suburban box system with 10 compartments per box could replace 250 on-site boxes and be ready in two months if approved. Mayor Lasser supports, Alderman Hoover notes security, and council to decide.
Provincial Secretary Evan Wolfe announced increased public library funding for the year rising from 5.53 million to 6.194 million with per capita grants up 10 percent to 1.60. He cited census-driven local grant boosts benefiting Vancouver Island Fraser Valley and East Kootenays amid economic strains. The note thanked the Library Advisory Council as BCLTA and BCLA met in Richmond with attendees Bunne Hoffman Brenda Little and Mary Waller.
Board chairman Merlin Nichol announced an emergency service boost after the provincial government cut the hospital budget by 24 percent from 1.7 million, costing 331 thousand in operations. The cut, effective May 5, follows staffing reductions since July 1981, with labor costs about 80 percent of the budget and a planned bed reduction to 16 plus limited pediatrics and basinettes. The hospital will extend emergency coverage to seven days a week.

Jim Shirley from Chetwynd plays Johnny Canuck in Hurray Johnny Canuck produced by Dionysus Theatre Company in Dawson Creek. Directed by Kathy Friederici the one act won at Quesnel and will represent the Upper Fraser Area against ten provincial regions in Kamloops. Shirley, son of Bob and Marion Shirley, is among 26 company members for the festival.
Tenders estimated at twelve million dollars have been called for Tumbler Ridge development in British Columbia. Work covers two residential subdivisions Town Centre and infrastructure including water sewer and storm drainage. An airport opening ceremony will be held May 21 with Don Phillips officiating. Public invited.
