Barbiturates include phenobarbital amobarbital pentobarbital and secobarbital with Tuinal. They treat insomnia anxiety and epilepsy and are abused for alcohollike euphoria. They appear as white powders in capsules tablets ampolules suppositories or solutions. Taken orally rectally or by injection they depress the central nervous system starting with wakefulness and attention and widening with higher doses.
Short term effects depend on dose and setting with some users experiencing calmness anxiety or delirium. In social settings larger doses mimic alcohol with slurred speech and irritability while quiet settings produce sleep. Large doses cause anesthesia and fatal doses cause respiratory failure. Duration ranges eight to twelve hours for long acting forms and four to six hours for short acting types. Hazards include accidents from intoxication dependence withdrawal and potential for overdose especially with alcohol.
The British Columbia Gift Tax Act limits tax on gifts to discourage pre death estate distribution and aligns with the federal shift of gift taxation in 1972. Exemptions cover gifts up to 2000 to a person per year with a 10000 cap, spousal gifts up to 10000 yearly, and joint tenancy gifts in the family home.
