Editorial on Jackfish and Big Lakes restocking debate
Maureen Gammon critiques the March 22 open information meeting where a 41 to 34 vote against restocking Jackfish and Big Lakes occurred. She argues the meeting was misused for non fish concerns, notes a hung jury, and calls for broader consideration of local interests and ecological impact alongside tourism and development. The piece shifts to government timber policy, noting effective April 1, 1989 sawdust and sawlog export fees rise to 100 percent of export value over domestic price, with BC Forests Minister Parker claiming exports will decline. federal measures may cut exports further.
