Hagen unveils Access For All postsecondary plan
Advanced Education and Job Training Minister Stan Hagen announced a 2009 plan to add 15 000 university spaces over six years, create degree programs in Kelowna Kamloops and Nanaimo, and explore a new northern BC degree granting institution. The strategy increases capacity mainly in the lower mainland with 8 600 new spaces, and 6 400 elsewhere, plus 1 800 spaces this fall at colleges. Funding of 35.3 million in year one backs 30 new college programs across 20 locations.

Tree farm licence review to take time
Minister Dave Parker said the tree farm licence policy review will be delayed past March after more than 300 public presentations totaling about 90 hours and over 3,000 attendees. About 80 written submissions arrived by the March 17 deadline, with results not expected before late June while material is carefully reviewed. The eight sessions’ proceedings will be viewable through BC Forest Service offices and the Timber Harvesting Branch in Victoria by end of May.

ICBC 1988 Costs Exceed Premiums Drive Rate Fears
The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia reported a record 649000 claims in 1988 and noted that for every 100 dollars in Autoplan premiums earned, 101 dollars were paid in claims. Claim costs topped 1.045 billion dollars, prompting warnings of a substantial premium rise for 1990 if trends persist.
