Cottage Crafts opens in Chetwynd by Morris family

Phyliss Morris and her husband Ken, new business people in Chetwynd, opened a cottage crafts and hobby store last November near Don Titus. The shop carries sewing notions, crochet cottons, tapestries and tapestry wool, plus confectionery items. Phyl designs original crafts and displays a thistle quilt for a friend in Scotland.

St Patrick Day Celebrations Reach British Columbia

March 17 sees Canadians of many heritages joining Irish traditions with green attire and shamrocks. The day honors Saint Patrick, Ireland’s patron, while churches shrines and schools worldwide, including several in British Columbia, mark the celebration.

Chetwynd Chamber discusses broadcasting and mayoral pay

The Chetwynd chamber hosted BC Tel official Windsor to describe a new electronic system. Plans for Rodeo and Frontier Days were outlined with Morag Buchanan leading the organizing committee. Ray Cunningham updated on TV upgrades and two ITV channels went on air. A broadcasting site near Moberly Lake was noted. Trade and Transportation Show set for September 7 to 9, with $3400 brochure and at least 100 exhibitors sought. The chamber formed a shopping promotion committee. Mayor Lasser urged a raise in official remuneration, requesting 8 percent in 1984 and 50 percent in 1985, threatening resignation. A council vote on sending support for his terms failed. The bylaw, discussed by Council, may be addressed in two weeks.

B C Tel Switch To New Service Head In Chetwynd

The B C Telephone exchange in Chetwynd will launch one of the most modern computers in the communications field on March 17. Installation Supervisor George Windsor spoke to the Chamber of Commerce, noting a total of 2.3 million dollars has been invested to establish the new system and its capability for future upgrades.

Canfor Chetwynd mill picket ends after two weeks

P.P.W.C. picketers returned to Prince George after two weeks of protests at the Canfor mill in Chetwynd. Union member Dave Oleskiw said picketing began when the contract expired June 30 1983 and Canfor’s final offer failed to match IWA terms, aiming to avoid incidents while signaling discontent.

More than forty members and guests attended as Donna Yates, President of the Assembly of BC Arts Councils, spoke at a Chetwynd Community Arts Council meeting. Discussion covered district versus mayoral appointments to the Arts Ad Hoc Committee and council representation concerns.

Council Meeting Minutes for Chetwynd February 7

The Chetwynd and District Council held its regular meeting on February 7 with all members present. The Pine Valley Horse Association attended, presenting a plan to improve two thirds of 34 acres at Rodeo Grounds Park, including building upgrades, new outbuildings, and a year round residence for a groundskeeper as shown on their map.
