Council takes positive steps at last week’s meeting

The council passed motions to bolster the community including funding the Chamber of Commerce to hire a manager and promote economic growth. An advisory commission may name up to 12 people, with candidates named, and a final report from consultant Glen Baker was approved for a meeting within two weeks.

Wells Declared Safe Water Along Pine River

Dr. Kay Wotton of Peace Liard Health reports Pine River wells are safe for drinking after seven months with no oil spill impact. The 1,000 cubic metre spill near Aug 1 2000 prompted precautionary uses of trucked water and new wells for residents at risk. A spring freshet review will decide if remaining hydrocarbons affect river water quality.

Muskwa Kechika Trust Funds $2 Million For 36 Projects

Premier Ujjal Dosanjh and Ian Waddell announce Muskwa Kechika Trust Fund approvals totaling $2 million for 36 projects in 2000/2001. The six point three million hectare region gains global interest for wilderness and wildlife while funding supports planning management science information base storefront office in Fort St John youth ecotourism and public park planning efforts with ongoing inventories and site cleanup.
