Goodale defends CWB reforms in TV news conference
Canadian Wheat Board Bill C-4 defense from Minister Ralph Goodale emphasizes board control by two thirds elected farmers, with current structure including five government appointees. Critics led by Reform's Jay Hill push for further changes, while farmers’ participation and crop coverage remain focal points amid a $6 billion taxpayer backstop. Elections for the CWB board are slated before year end.

Warmer Peace Region Tied to Shifting Climate Trends
Climatologist Virginia Wittrock of the Saskatchewan Research Council told Peace area farmers the Peace River region has warmed by about one degree Celsius over the past two decades with trends likely continuing. She noted winters growing milder, cited El Nino as a short term influence on precipitation, and said projections point to a dry spring followed by wetter June. Global models have been adjusted for 1998 as El Nino remains strong, making predictions uncertain. A warmer environment could boost wheat quality from no. 2 to no. 1, while fewer days below -40 C could raise fire risk. The talk was at Ag Day 98 in Dawson Creek amid two recent rained-out harvests.
