Allan Martin wins Chetwynd Father of the Year after numerous nominations. Brian Campbell, a foster child of Jane Martin, praises Allan for kindness, hikes, camping, and fishing. He notes Allan’s patience with his slow walk, and that Allan shares rides and gifts.
The Anual Awards Day at Northern Lights College in Dawson Creek on June 6 honored local students. Governor General's Gold medal and $100 went to Graham Cook, Lt. Governor General's Silver medal and $100 to Debbie Nelson, with a congratulatory letter from the Governor General's secretary. Other scholarships included a $100 South Peace Women's Institute award to Don Thames, $250 BC Telephone Company scholarships to Kenneth Arnott and Gilles Gauthier, a Lakeview Credit Union prize to Kelly Jackson, and three college awards of $75 to Mary Gordon Shelly Vipond and Florence Loiselle. This was the second annual Awards Day, with tours of Pine River Gas Plant noted, though public tours were not available.
Westcoast Transmission will shut the Pine River natural gas plant 115 miles north of Prince George for the summer due to weak export sales to the United States. The facility with 38 workers will resume operation by October amid maintenance work.
Ministers Alex Fraser and Don Phillips travelled by road to Chetwynd to inspect McLeod Lake paving due end of August and review a broad upgrading program. Contracts were to be let for Bennett Creek to Mt Lamoray paving with a large $10 million project around Azueetta Lake planned next year.
Vancouver BC taxpayers face a multi hundred million dollar plan to build a rail spur from Prince George to Prince Rupert for exporting northeast coal to Japanese steelmakers. The proposal involves BC Rail and CN with Ottawa and Liberal leaders pledging substantial funding. Critics warn of subsidized resource exports and uncertain profitability.
Continuing overcast weather and rain this past week eased forest fire danger, except in the Northern region. Fires east of Fort Nelson and in Peace River Country are being moped up with infra red scanning from a U S Forest Service air craft. Hank Derksen notes scanner accuracy helps locate danger spots. Prince George reports 81 active fires of 135 province wide, with 192 firefighters on scene. Total fires reach 728 burning 42 483 hectares, versus 938 fires and 7 133 hectares last year. Brian Anderson of Chetwynd earned a Bachelor of Education degree as part of 1,263 UVic graduates finishing the 1979 80 academic year. The ceremony drew degree recipients from 10 Canadian provinces two territories and 19 other countries.
