Loggers Sports Day draws contestants from far south

The 5th Annual Peace River Loggers Sports Day in Chetwynd drew contestants from Washington and California. May 24 weekend events featured 223 entrants in loggers events and 30 in horseshoe. Hon Don Phillips opened ceremonies, with Mayor Lasser greeting visitors. Claude Stubley hosted, and the Chetwynd Loggers Sports Association organized the day. Results listed include Axe Throwing led by Roy Cunningham and Archie Shannon for Tree Falling, with trophy grants from Grant Bros and McCoys.

Pfanner Appointed to Board of Variance in Chetwynd

Mr. Ernie Pfanner is named by the Department of Municipal Affairs to join the Village of Chetwynd Board of Variance. The threemember board will include one provincial appointee E Pfanner, one chosen by the village council, and a third selected by the two members. Duties of the board follow.

Main Street program eyed for British Columbia towns

Mr Macrory outlined the Devonian Group of Charitable Foundations Main Street plan to the Chamber of Commerce. The program funds beautification and face lift projects in towns with a two thirds local, one third Devonian contribution, deadline 1979, about 40000 dollars available for Chetwynd.

1977 Rodeo Parade Set for June 11 in Chetwynd

The 1977 Rodeo Parade will start at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday June 11 with nine entry categories including best commercial, organizational, comic, bicycle, dressed rider, dressed cowgirl, walking group, riding group and horse drawn. Entries must contact Don Wallace at (788)9138 with a June 9 deadline and be at the Fire Department lot by 9:00 a.m. June 11.

Ethier Named All Around Cowgirl at High School Rodeo

Holly Ethier of Chetwynd earned All Around Cowgirl honors after the high school rodeo weekend. Fort St. John led with 118 points, Chetwynd second with 66, and full results list winners in bull riding saddle bronc calf roping undecorating goat tying and cow riding across multiple competitors.

Chetwynd firemen host zone hose laying contest

Chetwynd Volunteer Fire Dept hosted the 1977 Peace River Zone hose laying competition on May 21 with Mackenzie Peace River Fort St. John Taylor and Chetwynd taking part. Winners included Taylor and Chetwynd in hose laying, Chetwynd and Mackenzie in bucket filling, and Mackenzie sweeping several events. An overall tie for first place occurred between Chetwynd and Mackenzie with a special Pouce Coupe award and multiple event wins by Chetwynd competitors.

Chetwynd firm lands contract for 14 mile clearing

A Chetwynd firm, Roller Bros. Construction Ltd., won the contract for clear ing and grubbing along a 14 mile stretch from east of Chetwynd to the Martin Creek turnoff to Gwiliam Lake. The bid of 83,900 was the lowest of nine. The project covers 268 acres, starts mid June, lasts about two months, and employs seven locals. Total cost with engineering supervision is 100,000.
