Housing costs fuel Vancouver labor unrest
In Vancouver, chief economist Richard McAlary of the B C Central Credit Union links housing costs to labor strife. He notes housing prices up 100 percent in 18 months, rents rising faster than wages, and high inflation rates. He sees rising vacancies by spring but ongoing rent pressures, while job shifts help strikers extend disputes. Over 100,000 workers, about one in five of B C's unionized workforce, are on or tied to strikes, with 1981 expected to top 1972 as BC's worst year for labor disputes.

Exemptions Extend Social Service Tax To Disabilities Aids
The provincial cabinet approved retroactive tax exemptions for transportation aids for handicapped persons and broad safety equipment perks. Finance Minister Hugh Curtis said the changes, tied to the 1981 Budget, remove the tax from wheelchairs, lifters, ramps, vehicle lifts, and hand controls, while approving a wide list of work related safety gear to be exempt. Curtis stressed the aim to boost mobility for disabled British Columbians and noted fuel tax rebates for eligible handicapped residents.
