Forest Fires in British Columbia
Fire losses in British Columbia forests average 4.6 million cubic metres yearly, about 6 percent of harvest. About half of the 2,600 fires originate from lightning, with smokers campers hunters and fishermen causing most of the rest. Detection networks, lookouts, aircraft, and air tankers initiate rapid attack, aided by Helitac crews from helicopters. Ninety percent of fires are contained before reaching 4 hectares, and only 2 percent exceed 100 hectares.

Land deal rejected by Hay River native leaders
Northern Dene Nation and Metis delegates at Hay River Reserve near Yellowknife rejected a 500 million land claim agreement in principle. About 300 delegates voted against signing and demanded talks with Prime Minister Mulroney and federal minister Bill McKnight to renegotiate seven points including self government aboriginal title and water rights. The proposed deal would grant 180 000 square kilometres of land and 500 million dollars. President Bill Erasmus stressed the need to continue negotiations with Ottawa. Earlier regional tensions threatened unity within the Dene.
