Louisiana Pacific begins sod turning for Chetwynd pulp mill

The July 13 1989 sod turning marked the start of Louisiana Pacific's 150 million dollar BCTMP pulp mill 14 miles east of Chetwynd on the 1A road. Dignitaries including Mel Mountain MLA Jack Weisgerber Mayor Charles Lasser and MP Frank Oberle attended. The project aims for 85 employees at full production in late 1990 and uses 100 percent aspen with minimal emissions and environmental monitoring throughout.

Pine River pulp mill project faces strict environmental conditions

Environment Minister Bruce Strachan outlined that Louisiana Pacific must install best available technology and operate strictly within permits for the Pine River mill near Chetwynd. No variances will be allowed, and permits depend on ongoing environmental impact assessments. MLA Jack Weisgerber praised safeguards enabling construction this year, noting jobs and regional benefits.
