Better health care for rural Canadians announced by minister
Minister Allan Rock outlines two new programs to aid rural health care in Canada alongside Rural Development Secretary Andy Mitchell. The $50 million Innovations in Rural and Community Health Program allocates $18 million for rural projects and $11 million for a rural health program including the Office of Rural Health, plus $2 million for national policy work. A second program, the $80 million Canada Health Infrastructure Partnership Program CHIPP, supports telemedicine and telehome care to connect rural areas with major centres. Proposals accept until July 31 2000, aiming to improve access to primary care and services close to home. The government emphasizes sustainable, publicly funded health care across provinces and territories with focus on First Nations and Inuit health.
