The Echo visits the Northern Initial Fire Attack Crew base at Chetwynd Municipal Airport and learns NIFACs role as the first response team to forest fires. They dispatch by helicopter or truck, assess fires on scene, and call for reinforcements if needed. Summer fire danger is low. crew activity centers on project work like peeling logs for fort St. John picnic tables and clearing brush. Members average five years’ experience and enjoy Chetwynd, though housing was tight with three members renting a skid trailer. Continued on page 24
