Chetwynd Voters Back Former Mayor Oberle In July Election

In Chetwynd the Progressive Conservative Frank Oberle won a clear majority with 350 votes. Allan Bates 150, Bob Stevenson 50, and Wendell Smith 42 followed. Oberle, mayor 1968–72, later served in parliament after 1972 election and has held roles in local commerce and hospital groups. His wife Joan is active in community work. National results gave Liberals a majority with 141 seats. Conservatives 95. NDP 16. Social Credit 11. one independent.

Wilf Carter Delights Over 1000 In Northern BC Show

The northern village in British Columbia drew more than 1,000 fans for Wilf Carter’s concert at the Arena. The audience danced later at Elks Hall as Carter, famed for touring Canada, the U S and Scotland, shared his stage presence and his signature yodel in My Swiss Moonlight Lullaby.

Work to begin on Highway 29 improvements this year

Alf Nunweiler MLA visited to inspect the Chetwynd to Hudson's Hope stretch, calling it in deplorable condition and pushing for high priority. Tendering expected soon, with major repair funding of 1.4 million plus work on adjacent segments, totaling 43 miles redeveloped under a 4 million Extraordinary Pavement Repair Programme announced by Premier Dave Barrett.

Canadian Institute course completes for Peace River reps in Red Deer

Three Peace River Country Chamber of Commerce members Attend a week long course at Red Deer Community College in Alberta. Attend Fort St. John Dawson Creek and Associated Chamber of Commerce leaders joined twenty eight students to study oral communication committee management fundraising and parliamentary procedure. Government assists scout jamboree in Sooke preparation

The 2nd Provincial Scout Jamboree at Sooke receives broad government support. The Provincial Secretary Hon Ernest Hall provides 14900 dollars, plus in kind gifts. Highways improves access, Forest Service advises on fire prevention, and manpower projects aid tenting areas. Ferries coordinates transport between mainland and Vancouver Island for 4000 attendees.

Preparations advance for BC Hydro Site One power dam

BC Hydros 700000 kilowatt Site One project progresses with C W J Chris Boatman named construction manager. He will divide time between Site One near Peace River and the G M Shrum station project. Boatman, a civil and structural engineering graduate from Twickenham College in London, succeeds Ray Hunt who moves to Vancouver as assistant manager.
